Back-up procedure

Many organisations struggle to implement rock-solid back-up procedures because it's costly, time-consuming and boring.  Name one IT professional who enjoys replacing back-up tapes, ensuring the back-up has run successfully, testing the restore process and carrying out restores when required!

At our AT&T data centre facility we have a dedicated Storage Area Network on a Fibre Channel backbone.  All data are backed up nightly and in the event of data loss - whether through accidental deletion or some other event - we can recover within hours.

The deleted items retention is set for 10 days for both mail items and Public Folders so that even if a user deletes their mail accidentally, it can be recovered just by choosing Recover Deleted Items from the Outlook Tools menu.

Virus Scanning

Checking for viruses and spam is a major undertaking for many organisations.  And most fail anyway.  There's more to it than installing some software and relaxing.  Not only must the latest technology be used, it must be continually maintained, updated and monitored to stay ahead of hackers (and malicious employees or competitors).

We employ best-of-breed mechanisms for content and virus scanning and Spam control on all incoming and outgoing messages to Internet. Only specified domains are authorised to relay messages through our SMTP servers. We currently use Mail sweeper software for Content Scanning and Spam Control and the Sophos anti-virus engine for Virus checking.
